Evil Dead was part one of a trilogy, part two on its way photo
Evil Dead was part one of a trilogy, part two on its way
by Alec Kubas-Meyer

After unveiling itself to the world with some absolutely crazy trailers, Evil Dead had a lot to live up to. Not only did it have to be able to stand with Sam Raimi's films, but it needed to justify that crazy awesome tongue-splitting makeout session thing. If the review from our boys over at South by Southwest is any indication, the team succeeded. I am extremely excited for the film's wide release.

And now they're going up against the big one. Sure, The Evil Dead was an awesome film, but The Evil Dead 2 is really the film that everyone remembers. As it turns out, this new vision of the crazy cabin escapades is part of a trilogy, and the writing duo of Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues Mendez are already hard at work on the sequel. There isn't much information about where things are going to go from here, and I can't speak to how open the film's ending is, but I can't say I'm unhappy with this.

Which is really kind of weird, actually...

Evil Dead 4 would essentially be Army of Darkness 2 photo
Evil Dead 4 would essentially be Army of Darkness 2
by Geoff Henao

[From March 9th - 17th, Flixist will be providing coverage from South by Southwest 2013 in Austin, TX.  Prepare yourselves for reviews, interviews, features, photos, videos, and all types of shenanigans!]

During my roundtable with Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert (Evil Dead), the subject of how different Evil Dead is compared to The Evil Dead (1981) came up. With rumors and backtracking provided by Sam Raimi himself, we took it upon ourselves to ask Campbell and Tapert their thoughts on a proper sequel to Evil Dead.

Campbell had this to say about the subject:

This [Evil Dead] gives it a lot of space, and the series can operate independently in different universes. We can still make Evil Dead 4. [It] has nothing to do with this movie, whatsoever. Nothing, just a creepy book, that's the only thing they have in common.

When pressed on whether that meant Evil Dead 4 was already confirmed, Campbell replied:

Sam's been talking about it. Rob and I are like, 'Show us a script.' [...] If we did another, Army of Darkness 2, which is really what it would be, it wouldn't be Evil Dead 4 because Army of Darkness changed its name a bit. So really, it would be Army of Darkness 2.

Tapert concludes:

Nowhere was it called Evil Dead 3. It was Army of Darkness everywhere. Fans knew it as that.

From the mouths of the gods themselves. Whatever the nomenclature may be, it seems more and more likely that, depending on the proper script, we might see Raimi, Campbell, and Tapert continue what they started so many years ago.

Sam Raimi explains/kinda dials back Evil Dead 4 comments

When Sam Raimi said he wants to work on the Evil Dead 4 script this summer, I immediately assumed this would be part of a pattern of Evil Dead sequel disappointments: something might happen, and then it doesn't. (Same thing h...

UPDATE: Sam Raimi to write Evil Dead 4 script this summer photo
UPDATE: Sam Raimi to write Evil Dead 4 script this summer
by Hubert Vigilla

[UPDATE: Sam Raimi confirmed to Red Carpet News TV that he wants to write Evil Dead 4 this summer and make the film. Red Carpet News TV asked how the film would work alongside the upcoming Evil Dead remake and where the plot of Evil Dead 4 would start. See what Sam Raimi had to say after the cut. UPDATE 2: A day or so later, Sam Raimi dials back expectations.]

While in London promoting Oz the Great and Powerful, Sam Raimi nonchalantly dropped a bomb. During a press conference, Raimi got a question about another Evil Dead movie and responded with the following:

I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.

Who knows if Sam and Ivan Raimi will pick up old post-Army of Darkness plans for Evil Dead 4 or if they'll start fresh. And of course, this wouldn't be a good idea without Bruce Campbell on board. And it's hard to say how this will play alongside the forthcoming Evil Dead remake.

So it's a fever dream wrapped in a pipe dream right now, but you know what? Let's be happy and hopeful about this just for a little bit before someone pops the balloon and slaps the ice cream cone out of our hands.

The Rating Game: A Tale of Blood, Guts, and the MPAA photo
The Rating Game: A Tale of Blood, Guts, and the MPAA
by Sean Walsh

After the news broke that the first cut of Evil Dead received an NC-17 rating, Alec shot me a text suggesting I write up a little somethin' somethin' about whether or not the entire concept of NC-17 horror is a good thing.

That got me thinking, and thinking hard, about the genre. I've done my best to carve my niche on this site as the horror guy and I certainly have the scars to prove it. I've seen a lot of horror films and while I wouldn't call myself an authority, I do think I'm adequately qualified to weigh in on whether or not we really need NC-17 horror.

Trailer: Evil Dead

While not quite as, uh, colorful as the former trailer, this new green-band trailer tries to make up for it with more suspense and implied nastiness. Evil Dead has a long legacy to live up to, and so far I've been prett...

Red Band Trailer: Evil Dead photo
Red Band Trailer: Evil Dead
by Nick Valdez

Here's what we've been waiting for folks. Ever since that lucky jerk Matt described the teaser trailer from Comic Con a few weeks back, I've been waiting very impatiently for the actual footage to release...and I was not disappointed in the slightest.

I winced like five times. The trailer is striking, gritty, delightfully horrifying, and there's a few callbacks to the original. I mean just look at the last few minutes! Jebus, man! I'm willing to trust that Fede Alvarez knows exactly what he's doing with this. And if the trailer doesn't win you over quite yet, just remember that it's Campbell approved after all

NYCC: An interview with Bruce Campbell photo
NYCC: An interview with Bruce Campbell
by Matthew Razak

At NYCC I was able to fulfill one of my life goals: interview Bruce Campbell. The man did not disappoint. In a red sports jacket and black shirt he was walking around like he owned the joint (he basically did) and brashly declaring the new Evil Dead film, which I got to check the trailer out for, as amazing. Even when he wasn't up on stage at the panel he was on, and as he sat down to be interviewed you could tell he was excited about the new movie.

The new Evil Dead takes another group of teens into a small cabin in the woods, but this time the reason for heading up there is an intervention for one of the girls who is a heroin addict. Aside from the new plot we got to chat about why he thinks the new film needed to be made, how they went about re-imagining a horror classic with new director Fede Alvarez, and how much pain they put lead actor Jane Levy through with every torture they could. It was, in short, everything I could have hoped for, and coupled with the brutal trailer it has me believing in this new Evil Dead

NYCC: First image/trailer recap for the Evil Dead remake photo
NYCC: First image/trailer recap for the Evil Dead remake
by Matthew Razak

Update: Official image below.

I just got out of the panel for the Evil Dead remake where director . Needless to say Bruce Campbell rocked the house, pretty much pulling the most cheers and being generally awesome. He even gave a fan five dollars after she said something nice about him. The man knows how to work a comic convention crowd that's for sure.

But the reason we were all there was to learn about the new Evil Dead. We got to sit down with the three before the panel so we'll go into more details then, but during the panel we got to see an exclusive trailer before anyone else. I wasn't a massive fan of the idea of relaunching the series, but after seeing this truly brutal trailer it's very obvious that they're going all out with this thing.

Full description and thoughts below.
