International trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road

This Japanese trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road has more of everything I want from this film: more madness. More Max. More, more MORE. The giant Japanese characters strewn throughout make it even more enjoyable. The May 15th release feels so far away. I can't imagine living in Japan and having to wait until 6/20. [via YouTube]

Joel Kinnaman replacing Tom Hardy in Suicide Squad

One of the weirdest films coming out of Warner Bros and DC's upcoming film slate is definitely the supervillain team up film, Suicide Squad. Normally I'd make some joke about a bland white guy replacing a bland white guy...

Nick's Top 15 Movies of 2014 photo
Nick's Top 15 Movies of 2014
by Nick Valdez

It was the best of films, it was the blurst of films. Hey everyone I'm Nick Valdez, News Editor here for Flixist and you've probably seen my name on a good chunk of the stuff written here. If not, then I'll tell you a bit about myself. I like movies, songs about butts, and pink frosted donuts. I'm going to get a tattoo of a mix of all three of those things someday.

Oh but you're here for this list. I've reviewed 51 films this year, and that's way more than I've ever done for the site before. That also means I've been way more involved in 2014 films than in past years so this list has been particularly tough. So, I guess let's get to it then.

Trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road has a road...it is furious

You never know quite what you're getting with Mad Max, and Fury Road will deliver that bonkers mentality in spades. With this trailer (and the one released around San Diego Comic-Con) I'm already won over completely. Stunning visuals, comic grit, and we have yet to see Tom Hardy say a word. Calling it early, 2015 Movie of the Year for sure Mad Max: Fury Road opens May 15th next year.

Review: The Drop photo
Review: The Drop
by Matthew Razak

The Drop is one of those little crime thrillers that comes out and no one really hears about it and you aren't sure why it was made. Possibly the studio thought it could grab some award love or something, but nothing is actually going to come out of it. This is too bad because Tom Hardy gives a performance that you could never see coming from the man.

The Drop sadly isn't up to its star's performance, but that only makes Hardy stand out more. There is nothing more fantastic than watching an actor completely embody a role. There are few things more upsetting than watching the movie surrounding it never match it.

First official trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road photo
First official trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road
by Nick Valdez

Thanks to the Mad Max: Fury Road panel at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, we've finally gotten our first trailer for the long awaited, long delayed, long in trouble sequel to George Miller's original trilogy. It's striking, loud, and perfectly captures the tone of the original films (with some disgusting beauty to boot). Some of the visuals looked off the first time I viewed the trailer, but watching it over again I realized I was off my rocker. There's just some weird CG here and there.

Starring Tom Hardy as the titular Max, a man just trying to survive without his wife and child, and Charlize Theron as Furiosa, a woman who just wants to get home, Fury Road is essentially one long chase scene in the desert. That sounds fantastic.

Mad Max: Fury Road hits theaters May 15th, 2015 but I wish it came sooner. Here's the synopsis and character posters:

First trailer for The Drop, starring Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini

Review: Lawless photo
Review: Lawless
by Hubert Vigilla

There's something about John Hillcoat and Nick Cave collaborations that click when they're working. I think about that harsh Aussie western The Proposition, or Cave and Warren Ellis's scores on The Proposition and The Road. Both Hillcoat and Cave just have a certain way around the rowdy stuff and the tender stuff that usually cracks like a shovel to the head.

Lawless is a mix of the rowdy and the tender as well. The screenplay was written by Cave, adapted from Matt Bondurant's historical novel The Wettest County in the World. We have dusty outlaws making moonshine, getting paid, and cracking the skulls of city boys that look down on them. And there's that swaggering bluegrass soundtrack that's also a mix of stomps and coos.

When it's going, it's going great, which is why it's unfortunate that Lawless slumps the way it does.
