Assassin's Creed

Director Justin Kurzel would like the Assassin's Creed sequel to be a Cold War noir

A 20th century Assassin's Creed

The first Assassin's Creed isn't out yet, but already there's speculation about a potential sequel. Such is the case with franchise-launching movies. If director Justin Kurzel had his druthers, he'd like to bring the story from the Spanish Inquisition to the Cold War in America.

Speaking with French publication Premiere (translated by Dark Horizons), Kurzel said the following about a new era for Assassin's Creed:

I thought about maybe not going too far back, maybe into, like, the ’50’s in America. You know, I think that could be a really interesting period around the Cold War. Traditionally, I think they’ve gone back further than that. Recent history is something I’m quite interested in. You can definitely kind of do a film-noir thing to it.

This would mark a major departure from the games in the series, but might be fruitful for a cinematic take on the conceit. Dark shadows, billowy overcoats concealing an arsenal, smoke, nice hats. It'd be a new sub-genre of disillusionment and martial arts action--parkour noir?

After his brutally unsettling debut The Snowtown Murders, Kurzel's made feature films that have been heavily rooted in period filmmaking. His next movie, The Siege, breaks from this, focusing on the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

What do you think about a 20th century Assassin's Creed? What other era might be good to explore? Let us know in the comments.
