The above header is fanart, NOT an official piece of art from the movie... but isn't it sad that this fanart evoked more excitement from me than all of the official images combined? I swear, the people making this movie have the WORST PR team and should be effing fired.

Speaking of movies called The Amazing Spider-Man, Marc Webb, the film's director, shared some thoughts on his reasoning for this Spidey film's decidedly different direction to that of Sam Raimi's original trilogy:

Peter Parker is a science whiz. If you look back to the early Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comics, he’s a nerd with big glasses. The idea of what a nerd is has changed in 40 or 50 years. Nerds are running the world. Andrew Garfield made a movie [called "The Social Network"] about it. Nerds are no longer pariahs and knowing how to write computer code is [no] longer a [mocked] quality. What was important in those early comics was this notion that Peter Parker is an outsider and how we define that in a contemporary context.

That makes sense...

The 90-pound weakling, that’s who Spider-Man is when he gets bit. So much of the DNA of the character is the fact that he was a kid when he got bit. He is imperfect, he is immature and has a bit of a punk rock instinct. In his soul he’s still a 90-pound weakling even after [the transformative bite].

Whoa, wait, huh? What? "Punk rock instinct"? Since when, Marc Webb? Peter Parker was never 'punky'. He was never cool and never had feathered coifs that attracted the ladies. I agree that he's imperfect, but I think it's important to keep the essence of Peter Parker in tact. He's a gifted genius who is kind of shy and unassuming. From what I've seen so far, he looks like a jock playing for the home team. What gives, I tell ya, what gives?

One of the things we tried to do was keep the stunts more grounded physically and that was a huge challenge because you have a character whose abilities are superhuman. How do you do that in a way that’s convincing and real?… We spent months and months and months developing rigs so he could swing in a way that wasn’t computer-generated. Obviously there’s going to be enhancements and CG [sequences], but it’s based in a physical reality and that’s a new technique [for this film brand].

Pff... I dunno. I guess here's hoping it looks good. I've seen some pretty hoaky stunts before that used these "rigs" he speaks of, so I think it's a safe bet that it will look like a mid-90's movie that used mainly stunts but then tried out some CGI that cost them a billion dollars to render out a single jump animation... Except now you can pretty much get that done for under a thousand, so they're golden.

Don't F it up Webb. Please.
I haven't really had a chance to voice my opinion about Webb, but I liked 500 Days of Summer and THAT wasn't a completely serious piece of cinema. It was at times, but it had a somewhat campy quality to it, but it was fun... I just hope this isn't Webb trying to be Christopher Nolan, because that will just zap any charm this movie might have.
trailer seems pretty serious. When Webb mentions "punk rock instinct" I don't think he was referring to his looks but rather, his character. and I mean in terms of Calvin and Hobbes. you know, it builds character. ;) ANYWAYS I think his point was that Peter Parker almost has this punk rock attitude by way of doing the things he wants to do, rather than following a norm. this in turn makes him the contemporary outcast that Webb is trying to portray. think about the nineties. I was a teenager then and I purposely became/fell in love with the punk rock ideals / real anarchy till I realized how much a hypocrisy it is. I mean, still listen to pennywise and nofx but I'm not gunna get butthurt if someone disses on me because I dig the new A Day to Remember album.

whilst I agree that the idea of punk is way more popular now thanks to that emo revolution in the early 00's, I still think the trailer at least shows Peter as this outcast. I guess it can't be that hard to write considering someone already did the leg work. I mean the kid has no parents. I know thats one way to oust someone from a group at a young age.
Um... Tangents aside, good points, Saucetron. Kind of depressing to think that a kid with no parents is considered an outcast... I think that's one way to appear emo, though, so let's hope Webb steers clear of that persona.
I always kinda thought of Peter as a nerd that would like to be cool not a rebellious teen with a punk attitude. He uses his powers for fame and fortune and tells the world to go screw itself until it gets his uncle killed. Actually, I think Social Network is a good example of this. Mark and Eduardo were not cool at the beginning. They were nerds. Outcasts. They made Facebook to bag chicks and escape their former lives. The success of Facebook made them cool the same way Peter's powers and costume make him feel cool. Granted what's traditionally nerdy is pretty mainstream these days and it's even become cool to call yourself nerd (Miss America) but real nerds and geeks still exist. Beside, what are the big nerdy glasses for if he's not a geek?
very true kidplus. now that I think more about it and watched the trailer again, I really don't even see the punk rockiness as I thought. I really love how the story is attempting to stay true to book. like him finding that backpack that has his dad's stuff, cus his dad was also a scientist, which in turn makes Peter want to be scientist as well. it's gunna be pretty interesting to say the least. when I first heard that Andrew was gunna play Parker i was very skeptical. but now, I'm all in.

@Jamie

haha yeah I write in tangents. I'm annoying like that. sorry eh. I do agree that no parents is totally emo, and I also agree that i hope Webb doesn't go in that direction as well, seeing how that made spiderman 3 so freaking terrible.

Swinging unnecessarily into theaters next month, the Spider-Man reboot helmed by (500) Days of Summer's Marc Webb (people wittier than I have likely acknowledged his name in some capacity) has two new posters out. One continu...
