New Releases, week of 12/1/12: Yanni edition

10:00 AM on 11.27.2012

There are a couple big new releases this week as we get closer to the end of the year. The biggest of them is Men in Black III, which comes out Friday the 30th rather than today since it's special like that. Also out this week are ParaNorman, The Apparition, Step Up Revolution, and Lawless. The official SF Giants World Series video is out as well for all you Bay Area baseball fans and anyone who thinks the Dodgers suck serious butt. And, of course, Yanni on Blu-ray, just what you wanted for Christmas. (Yanni is cool and all, but he's got nothing on John Tesh.)

Honestly, the only new release that may get play from my wallet is the Pogues 30th anniversary concert video.

The re-release side is relatively quiet this week. The only thing I'm really interested in is Bill Plympton's restoration of The Flying House, a 1921 animated short by the great Winsor "Little Nemo in Slumberland" McCay. Visions of Ecstasy has me a bit curious -- it's a banned UK short featuring an obscene retelling of the ecstasy of St. Theresa. Maybe the most notable thing on the re-release front is the DVD cover to The Devil's Playground, a documentary on George W. Vanderbilt III trying to conquer the sea. This is not to be confused with the 2002 rumspringa documentary of the same name, though the image is a good metaphor for the inner spiritual struggle of Amish teenagers tempted by the world. The cover is in the gallery for your viewing pleasure.

Check out the full list of releases after the cut, and get funky with The Tesh.

I have never really cared too much about animation. I like animated films for the most part, but I rarely seek them out. I don't actually know why that is, and it's very possible that that will change in 2013. Why? Because 20...
