New Releases, week of 3/2/13: Who is the Master Edition

New Releases, week of 3/2/13: Who is the Master Edition photo

Even though Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master didn't do well at the 2013 Academy Awards, it will always run Bartertown in my heart. If you watched Flixist's Google Hangout for the Oscars, you know we all expected Joaquin Phoenix to rush the stage and attack Daniel Day-Lewis during the ceremony. (Maybe next year.)

There are plenty of other big new releases this week, but none of them are The Master. (Sho nuff!) The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, the big Razzie winner of 2012, also hits DVD and Blu-ray today. Rounding out the batch are Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, Leos Carax's Holy Motors, the indie relationship drama The Loneliest Planet, Chicken with Plums from Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, the underwhelming Elmore Leonard adaptation Freaky Deaky, and the acclaimed documentary on AIDS How to Survive a Plague.

On the re-release side, Criterion is putting out Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin's documentary Chronicle of a Summer as well as a Blu-ray edition of Kenji Mizoguchi's Sansho the Bailiff. There's also a re-issue of the film Joshua Tree from acclaimed stuntman and action director Vic Armstrong. And some more exploitation classics from Redemption Video, this time: zombies.

After the cut, this week's DVD and Blu-ray releases, and a little dose of mastery.

New Releases, week of 6/22/13: Totes Stoked Edition

Stoker is finally out. I'm happy to see it finally hit home video because it had a limited run in theaters and its been a film I've wanted to see for awhile. Nicole Kidman's in it, and she's one of my boos. I could go as far ...

Flixist Awards 2012: Best Actor

This year's Best Actor category had some fairly strong competition, between Daniel Day-Lewis' beloved portrayal of Abraham Lincoln, Denzel Washington's troubled airline pilot in Flight and Joaquin Phoenix's hauntingly disturbed character in The Master, Flixist almost had a three-way tie!
