Official synopsis for Alfonso Cuaron's new film Gravity

3:00 PM on 12.19.2011 // Hubert Vigilla

It's been five years since Alfonso Cuarón's dystopian masterpiece Children of Men, which was easily one of the best movies of the 00s. He's been busy at work on his latest film, Gravity, which is currently in post-production and will be released some time in 2012. The film stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, and an official synopsis for the film has apparently surfaced. Here it is:

Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky [Clooney] in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone -– tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.

The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth... and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.

But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Sounds a lot like the plot details we mentioned in November, and there's incredible potential here just given Cuarón's ingenuity. /Film's got additional comments from Gravity producer David Heyman and from Guillermo del Toro, both of which should get you even more excited for what's to come. We have video of Del Toro talking about Gravity (and Frankenstein) after the cut.
