Yet Gilliam is trying yet again. It's a case of the impossible dream vs the unstoppable dreamer.
Pictures from the production have showed up on Instagram. One of them was from actress Rossy de Palma, showing the cover to the revised screenplay for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. (As IndieWire notes, de Palma had been cast in the original production 17 years earlier.)
IndieWire reports that makeup artist Sylvie Imbert also posted an image on Instagram of a production grid for the film with the caption (translated from Spanish) "Final touches last night." It appears that the picture in question was deleted, however.
Assuming it does get made this time, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote will star Adam Driver as the guy Johnny Depp was supposed to play and Jonathan Pryce as Don Quixote. At one point John Hurt was attached to play Don Quixote in the film, though the production was delayed so Hurt could undergo cancer treatment. Hurt passed away in January.
As IndieWire notes, it remains unclear to what extent Amazon Studios is involved in this production. Amazon signed a deal with Gilliam and Jim Jarmusch at Cannes in 2015. Through Amazon Studios, Jarmusch released the impeccable Paterson and the Stooges documentary Gimme Danger last year.
Godspeed, Terry Gilliam. Good luck, and long may you run.
