Review: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey blew me away when I caught it in theaters and I gave it an appropriately high score because of that. It was truly stunning and another epic coming from Peter Jackson, but upon re-watchin...

See The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug early and free

After The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey turned out to be fun, but chock full of needless padding it became clear that it might not have been the best idea to stretch the book out into three films. However, it's still eas...

Yup, that's right. The artery clogging, bad cholesterol inducing Hobbit Menu at Denny's has returned for a sequel. To celebrate upcoming release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Denny's is doing a second run of their m...

Desolation of Smaug trailer reveals Smaug's voice

I actually came out of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey really enjoying it, but I do admit it had its flaws. One of which was that it felt really stretched over a thin plot. I don't think the second film, The Desolatio...

While The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey didn't necessarily blow everyone away (I liked it, Hubert not as much) that doesn't mean we can't be excited for the next entry in the series. Here we get our first look at The Desolation of Smaug, in which you actually see Smaug at the end so if you were trying to keep that a surprise don't watch.

Otherwise you'll not some classic scenes from the book, and more notably lots of scenes that aren't in the book. The film is clearly playing out a lot more Lord of the Rings development than the book ever had as the first one did. However, this looks even more extensive with the inclusion of Legolas and a bunch of other stuff that applies more to the latter trilogy. Here's hoping that the flaws of the first film are fixed up in the second and we get a true classic.

Also, some images you're sure to like if you like images of things from Middle Earth.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again delayed to December 2014

Crazy man eats entire Denny's Hobbit Menu in one sitting

Some crazy man named Jamie "The Bear" McDonald has eaten the entire Denny's Hobbit Menu in one sitting. An absurd amount of food that two giant manly men could only eat about a third of without slowly dying.  Seriously, pray for this man. Pray for his poor, poor insides.  [Jamie McDonald, via io9]

Review: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey photo
Review: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
by Matthew Razak

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is in a really tough spot. The film is the follow up to what is pretty much the most epic trilogy in film history. Plus, being based on a children's book and having a smaller story than its predecessor makes it, well, a lot smaller. It's really the story before the story, and as such should really be told before the story. Instead it's coming after, and that makes it's challenges even greater.

Not only does it have to live up to the immesnley high expectations established by the previous films, which netted Peter Jackson an Oscar, but it also has to feel like its something different. After all, anyone who has read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings knows that the two books may take place in the same world, but they are light years apart in terms of tone and content.

The Hobbit needed to be everything to everyone in order to be a great film, but doing that is impossible so a really good film will have to suffice.

Snaxist: Denny's Hobbit Menu photo
Snaxist: Denny's Hobbit Menu
by Nick Valdez

[Snaxist is all about the food. Specifically, movie endorsed food. We'll stuff our faces, destroy our bodies, point out why or why not eating endorsed foods is a good idea, and write about it all for your entertainment!]

Companies cross promote all of the time. Sometimes it makes sense...and sometimes it doesn't. Every once in a while, you'll get a byproduct of those cross promotions that makes so little sense, you just need to write about it. Snaxist is Flixist's brand new segment where we'll discuss food that is supposed to advertise how delicious a movie is.

Do you know what's releasing this weekend (Dec. 14)? That's right folks, the first film in the much talked about Hobbit trilogy! In anticipation of that release, Denny's has being running a special "Hobbit-ized" menu for the lesser part of a month now (maybe you've seen the awful commercial) up until early January.

For you fine readers of the site, Max Roahrig (RIP) and I decidedly devoured a few of the special menu's offerings. While we couldn't eat everything (since we aren't machines or Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec), we did get a good chunk of the massive menu. Read on for our "impressions" of these "fine delicacies."
