Sony planning female led Spider-Man spin-off

While fans are waiting on Marvel or Warner Bros to usher in the first superheroine film (sorry Marvel fans, Feige said Marvel's too busy for that), the dark horse Sony may be the first to break ground. Amongst their seemingly...

Amazing Spider-Man 3 pushed to 2018, Sinister Six dated

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2's dubious quality (although I was a fan!) and tepid box office performance, it seems Sony's taking a step back with this franchise. In a classic case of "counting chickens before they hatch," So...

Roberto Orci leaves Amazing Spider-Man 3

If The Amazing Spider-Man 2's quality left you wondering about the franchise's state of affairs, I'm sure this news may shake that up a bit more. Sony's had huge plans for the films with Venom, Sinister Six spin-offs, an...

Flixist Community Discusses: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 photo
Flixist Community Discusses: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
by Nick Valdez

Thanks to the Spider-Man property's massive popularity, talking about its movies are the most fun. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already started out in a hole since it seemed like a cynical sequel to Sony's original cynical property hogging (Sony can keep the Spider-Man license as long as it continues to make Spider-Man movies), but most folks were still holding out hope that this time it'd be different.

After the film's release, more so than the first film, criticism seemed particularly divided amongst our community. Some absolutely loved it, and some absolutely loathed it. Because I wanted to get to the bottom of why the opinions varied so much, we now have Flixist Community Discusses, a series in which we'll discover why a film may or may not be successful in what it set out to do.

Gathered from the comments (from both the opinions post and the review) and Twitter, here's what the Flixist Community thinks of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Some spoilers ahead!

Here's Amazing Spider-Man 2's X-Men: Days of Future Past tease

Normally we here at Flixist like to keep away from spoiling things like a post-credits scene (and not the one you have to Shazam for some reason), but this is such a bizarre situation, it should be okay to move forward. In o...

Hey everyone, let's talk about The Amazing Spider-Man 2! photo
Hey everyone, let's talk about The Amazing Spider-Man 2!
by Nick Valdez

From all of the talk I've seen here in the comments, on Twitter, and other film critics, everyone seems to be divided with The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Much like the response to the first film, we have both extreme negative and positive reactions to the sequel. Some out right hate the thing, and some really enjoyed it. I want to get to the bottom of this, so I'm going to need the help of the Flixist community.

If you've seen the movie, I want a reason why you may have liked or disliked the film. I'll gather all of your responses (labeled with who wrote them, of course), and pepper in some responses from the Flixist staff, into one post as "Flixist Community Discusses." If we all talk, and we see the varied opinions of all of you folks, I'm sure we'll get to the root of Spider-Man 2's problem. I think this can be fun!

So, if you're ready, leave a comment below, hit me up on Twitter (@Valdezology), or even send me an email at nick@flixist.com. The community post will go live Thursday, May 8th at 12PM CST, so I'll be taking responses until then! Hope you'll join the conversation!

Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 photo
Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
by Nick Valdez

The first Amazing Spider-Man failed to live up to the "Amazing" in its title. But while it wasn't perfect, it certainly had potential to become something great. Like with most superhero franchises, there's always a promise of better stories once the origin is out of the way. Despite some troubling advertising the last few months (the barrage of trailers, the announcement of yearly sequels and spin-offs), I still found myself looking forward to the The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

When done in an amazing, spectacular, or superior fashion, Spider-Man movies could be the best comic book films out there. More so than any other superhero, Peter Parker is relatable. He's just a goofy guy who's in way over his head sometimes. And the same thing can be said of this movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in way over its head. When power is handled irresponsibly, you get a fun but awkward web of a film.

You'll have to Shazam Alicia Keys to get Spider-Man 2's real post-credits tease

For all of you going to see The Amazing Spider-Man 2 this weekend, know two things. First, the mid-credits scene of the film is a commercial for X-Men: Days of Future Past due to hilarious contractual obligations, and second,...

Final Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer shows the rest of the movie photo
Final Amazing Spider-Man 2 trailer shows the rest of the movie
by Nick Valdez

I kid, I kid. But seriously, The Amazing Spider-Man 2's glut of promotional footage has gone and potentially spoiled the entire movie. But here I am hypocritically sharing it with you all. The weird thing is, I don't really mind. With what we know from Sony, Super Bowl teasers, and Marc Webb himself, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 isn't really all that important. It's just a stepping stone to another future Spider-Man film (but it still looks good, I guess!). Basically, there's no reason why I should be mad that I've seen so much of the film already since I'm getting a brand new one next year.

And then the year after that. And that. And possibly a third time.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings in May 2nd.

Only four minutes of Rhino in Amazing Spider-Man 2? That's a good thing.

At SXSW, Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb revealed that the Rhino, played by Paul Giamatti, will only be in the movie for a scant four minutes. GOOD. Three villains is too many, something Webb is well aware o...

Super Bowl TV spots for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 photo
Super Bowl TV spots for The Amazing Spider-Man 2
by Nick Valdez

Remember how we all saw The Amazing Spider-Man and were terribly disappointed with it? Expect all of that to change with its sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In three different videos (one released before the Super Bowl, one during the Super Bowl, and one online), AS2 completely capitalizes on the good will left by its first trailer. The Super Bowl spots themselves tease a very important arc in the comics, but the top "Enemies Unite Sizzle" is the real star of the show.

Jamie Foxx's Electro looks to be a very compelling villain. Someone who looked up to Spidey, but eventually realizes Spider-Man treats everyone the same. It might be a nice breakdown of how selfish Peter Parker could potentially be as a hero. And if the sequel is truly meant to set up a Spider-verse complete with spin-offs and multiple films, then this is a good direction to go in.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 webswings into theaters May 2nd.

First official trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 photo
First official trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2
by Nick Valdez

After The Amazing Spider-Man provided a serviceable first effort given the fact Sony had only made the film to avoid losing the rights, fans have been waiting anxiously to see what Sony could pull off for the sequel. The hype leading up to this has been slightly unbearable as we were treated to several trailer teases, banners that make the movie seem terrible, news of possible spin-offs, and pictures of Spider-Man in funny hats

But now that we have the first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, what does everyone think? I'm game for it because Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan are in it (as Electro, Rhino, and Harry Osborn respectively), and they're fine actors. At least it seems like a good webswing in the right direction.

Besides even if no one likes it, two more Spider-Man flicks are happening anyway. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 spins a web, any size, catches theaters like flies May 2nd.
