Of the two Monkey King movies coming out this year, I think I'm looking forward to Stephen Chow's Journey to the West more than the one starring Donnie Yen. (It might be because of my love of all things Stephen Chow and my over-a-decade-long screen crush on actress Shu Qi.) The behind-the-scenes footage of Journey to the West looked fun, and this official trailer is splendidly bananas.
Just look at this. It's like everything cartoony and wonderful happening all at once; a madcap collection of ideas and gags like a good old-fashioned Chow Cantonese comedy even though this film looks like it's in both Cantonese and Mandarin. Kind of makes me wonder how it will affect the wordplay usually found in Chow's scripts. Not that I understand Cantonese, but my Cantonese-speaking friends usually explain those gags to me.
Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons opens in China on February 7th to coincide with Chinese New Year. No word yet on international releases.
