'Cats' movie is a possibility, says Andrew Lloyd Webber

Following the success of the Les Miserable film, which grossed $441 million, Andrew LLoyd Webber revealed in a recent Daily Mail interview that Cats may be next in line for a film adaptation.

"I haven’t seen the [Les Mis] film but it’s fantastic for musicals because everybody wants to make them again,” he said. “Universal has now got Cats out of the drawer in which they locked it years ago when they bought the rights and suddenly they’re talking about a film.”

Whether or not dancing humanoid cats will translate well onto the big screen remains to be seen, but if a renaissance of broadway-to-film adaptations is happening, then Cats is the perfect Les Mis successor. Cats holds the record as the second longest running broadway show in history, placing only after the renowned Phantom of the Opera.

As for now, we'll have to wait to see if a Cats movie can land on its feet (har har), or if it will tumble head over tail into the 'so-bad-it's-good' category. At least we'll always be able to take pleasure in loudly squawking "Magical Mr. Mistoffelees" to ourselves in the shower, regardless of the outcome.
