2019's Emmy nominees include lots of HBO and Netflix shows

The rise of streaming

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced this year's Emmy nominees and the list sees a lot of HBO and Netflix shows. It seems the rise of streaming services is starting to become too big to ignore because each company is up in practically every category available.

Overall, HBO landed the most nominations with 137 awards in the running. Game of Thrones, in particular, has 32 of those nominations and nearly sees one in each category. Netflix was a close second with 117 nominations (after having beaten HBO last year), and NBC was in a distant third with 58 total. Not content to let people disregard streaming, Amazon also holds a respectable 47 nominations.

As for actors, Games of Thrones strikes once again with 10 different celebs in the running. Leading stars Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke were obvious shoe-ins, but even guest star Carice van Houten saw a nomination in the "Guest Actress in a Drama Series" category. Despite all the blowback to how this past season was handled, it looks like Game of Thrones is still quite the frontrunner. As for which other shows were super popular, Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel nabbed 20 nominations, HBO's Chernobyl is sitting with 19, SNL has 18, HBO's Barry and FX's Fosse/Verdon have 17 each, and Netflix's When They See Us is holding 16.

The 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at 5 pm PST. It will be broadcast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with a host yet to be chosen. You can find the full list of nominations over on The Hollywood Reporter.
