Aquaman is the first DCEU film to top $1 billion globally

Box office round up

This weekend Aquaman may not have grabbed the number one spot as it lost out to The Upside in its fourth week, but the folks at WB and DC are probably still very happy as they've finally cracked the $1 billion mark with a superhero movie. That's a goal that Marvel has done on multiple occasions but Marvel hasn't been able to come close to despite bringing together all of their biggest superheroes in one movie already. China, where the film has brought in $287.3 million, is a big part of this and highlights the importance of the country in any blockbuster's plans as that's nearly as much as the domestic gross.

We should probably also mention the number one film of the week, The Upside. Not only did it outperform expectations by a wide margin but it gave perennial B-grade-movie-releaser STX its first number one opening ever. With $19.59 million in total, it's not a huge pull but considering the studio took a risk taking the movie off of Weinstein and then re-cutting it for a PG-13 rating they're happy they took it.
