Avengers: Endgame Super Bowl ad is more of an Infinity War support group ad

0

It's only really depressing

If the end of Avengers: Infinity War made you sad, at least know that the characters themselves are sadder. During Super Bowl LIII, an event nearly as dismal as the above advertisement, Marvel Studios unveiled quick looks at upcoming films Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, with the latter 30-second ad taking a decidedly somber tone.

One curious detail is just how long after Infinity War this fourth Avengers film will take place. Judging by the number of boats coalescing around Liberty Island, and the fact that there are already support groups and posters for those who have lost people, it looks like it's been a while. Regardless, Steve Rogers and his comrades refuse to give up.

There is zero action or combat in this ad, and it works to establish a more personal tone that contrasts with the epic feel of Infinity War. The Avengers look like they are using their anger, regret, and determination to drive them—Cap especially looks pissy in that support group scene. And on Tony Stark's side, the shot of him and Nebula apparently "sciencing the shit" out of something looks very reminiscent of Tony in the cave during the first Iron Man.

I have to wonder how much we're missing in this ad, considering how secretive and straight-up deceptive the Endgame marketing campaign will be. There's one shot in particular where Steve, Natasha, Bruce Banner, and Rhodey are observing something outside the Avengers facility, and there is a wide gap between the latter two characters—fans are already suspecting that this trailer edited a secret, spoiler-y character out.

All will be revealed in due time, when Avengers: Endgame, aka Marvel Studios' The Leftovers, releases in theaters on April 26.
