Batman v Superman drops 68.4% at box office in second weekend

Stiff competition from God's Not Dead 2

After setting major records during its opening weekend with $420 million worldwide, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had a rough second week. The film suffered a second-week drop of 68.4%. Most movies experience a drop in week two, typically around the 50% to 60% range. This dip is comparable to the dip of last year's Fantastic Four (68.2%), the Twilight films (69% to 70%), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (72%). Given the latter examples, a major drop is to be expected from a major opening gross.

Batman v Superman still brought in roughly $52 million domestically with no competition in terms of theatrical new releases save for God's Not Dead 2 (aka 2 God 2 Dead). With foreign receipts, the film has currently grossed more than $682 million. This means that the movie should still be well on its way to $800 million, the estimated break-even number.

Part of me wonders what kind of business Warner Bros hopes to have with Batman v Superman, and how these numbers compare. With the Justice League movie ready to shoot next week, it also makes me wonder if Warner Bros will be keep Zack Snyder under close watch.
