Bodies are starting to pile up in our first peek at Westworld’s second season

HBO’s Westworld was one of the network’s biggest hits of 2016; the sci-fi Western debauchery simulator inspired more theorizing and hot takery than any show since perhaps Game of Thrones.

So it’s no surprise that the show was big enough to warrant a slate at San Diego Comic-Con’s prestigious Hall H over the weekend. What is bit surprising, perhaps, is that cast and crew brought with them a first peek at the show’s second season – not due to release until sometime in 2018, more than a year after it first debuted. Check it out:

After last year’s season-ending uprising of robot cowboys and the ensuing massacre of both the assembled one-percent at the park and many employees operating it, the second season seems to pick up amid that chaos. We’ve got many, many shots of bodies littering Westworld, both in the park and behind the scenes. We see Delores and (most likely) Teddy, fully unleashed from their programming at the end of the first season, hunting down people who are (presumably) human. And at the end, we’ve got Old William (a.k.a. The Man in Black), face covered in blood, a smile dancing across his lips.

As Polygon’s post on the trailer notes, cast and crew said during the panel that the show is only one week into shooting the second season, meaning this early peek is comprised entirely of work from that short time – that’s pretty impressive.

Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, James Marsden and Jeffrey Wright, Westworld is set to return next year, though a firm release date has yet to be announced.
