Bodies pile up in the official trailer for Season 2 of Mindhunter

Kill them with calculations

It's been a bit of awhile coming for Mindhunter's second season, with the original ten episodes airing back in 2017. But in less than two weeks, Netflix is ready to dive back into the murk of the minds of murderers all over again.

Picking up mostly where we left off, in the late-'70s FBI Agents Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Tench (Holt McCallany) continue their work in the developing Behavioral Science Unit of the Bureau, poring over the most brutal and psychopathic of crimes in the hopes of developing a method to combat such cold-blooded savagery. Season two specifically focuses on the Atlanta murders of 1979-81, the true murder spree in Georgia that left nearly 30 victims, most of whom were children.

It's always rough subject matter, true crime, and the racial undertones of Mindhunter's second season make for an increasingly-topical discussion, one that Netflix and producer David Fincher seem to be taking seriously.

Fincher returns to direct the season premiere, and brings with him directors Carl Franklin (House of Cards, The Leftovers) and Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly). I'm particularly thrilled to see Dominik contribute to the season; Jesse James is one of my favorite films of all-time, and the Australian filmmaker seems generally under-discussed due to his less-prolific nature.

We'll see how things come together when season two of Mindhunter premieres in full on August 16, only on Netflix.
