Boogie down to the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice score by Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice comes out next week (March 25th), and whether Warner Bros suits are worried or not so worried, the film will make a big splash at the box office.

We just learned that you can listen to the entire Batman v Superman soundtrack via Spotify. The score is by venerable BWAAAAMer Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL of Mad Max: Fury Road fame.

Give the score a listen below.

Okay, it’s a little hard to dance to.

You can definitely hear some of Junkie XL’s Fury Road flourishes (driving percussion, needling staccato, synth breaks) in a few of the tracks, notably “Must There Be a Superman?” and “Do You Bleed?” Zimmer offers a nice minor key reprise of his Man of Steel theme as well. (I picture The Legion of Doom getting together to sing “Must There Be a Superman?” each year, sort of like Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”)

And yet apart from “Is She With You?” (which sounds like a track that would have been played by the Doof Warrior), not much stands out among the thundering, hammering bluster. The Batman suite is pretty blah, more like incidental music than anything with a leitmotif. This is especially disappointing given Zimmer’s wonderful work on Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, developing a recognizable Batman theme characterized by a sense of rising heroism as well as impending arrival. If anything, the Batman v Superman score is mainly a showcase for sturm und batarang.

Check back next week for some Batman and Superman stuff. Let us know what you think of the score in the BWAAAAAAmments section.
