Box Office Numbers: The Butler did it

0

And Kick-Ass 2 got its ass kicked

The big summer blockbusters are behind us and we're getting the first hints of prestige season. August truly is the January of the summer. The big winner at the box office last weekend was The Butler from Lee Daniels, with just over $25 million. The other big new release, Kick-Ass 2, wound up getting its ass handed to it. The sequel came in fourth place behind Elysium.

Jobs with Aston Kutcher debuted at seventh place, but the biggest bomb over the weekend was the techno-thriller Paranoia, starring Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman, Amber Heard, and Harrison Ford. The film opened to an abysmal $3.5 million, just one-tenth of its shooting budget.

Still trying to find out why Pacific Rim underperformed in Japan. The handful of articles I've read about it have mostly focused on the numbers themselves rather than what the numbers say about the audience response. The top film in Japan right now is the new Hayao Miyzaki film The Wind Rises.

Check out the box office numbers after the cut.
