Critics’ Choice Awards hand the top prize to Roma, also ends with some ties

0

Hollywood is moving at a snail’s pace towards the hostless Academy Awards, with the Critics’ Choice Awards being the latest stop in this awards season. The Favourite and Black Panther went in with momentum, receiving the most award nominations going in. While they both delivered some trophies, Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma eventually took the top prize.

It was slightly more predictable fare compared to the surprise Bohemian Rhapsody win at the Golden Globes, but that doesn’t mean that there weren’t occasionally some odd moments through the night. For one, the Best Actress award resulted in a tie, with both Glenn Close for The Wife and Lady Gaga for A Star is Born sharing the award. With some of these categories being so sprawling and including up to seven nominees, it appears that there were some splits amongst the voting critics. On the television side, another tie occurred with Amy Adams (Sharp Objects) and Patricia Arquette (Escape at Dannemora).

With the categories of this particular awards ceremony being a bit more robust and comprehensive, some other films that otherwise might have missed the mark in other shows got their fair share. Elsie Fisher of Eighth Grade was recognized as the best young performer, for instance. Mission: Impossible — Fallout received the Best Action Movie award and Crazy Rich Asians snagged Best Comedy, both being categories that aren’t in the Oscars.

Meanwhile, Black Panther cleaned up quite well in some of the crafting, artistic, and technical awards, picking up Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Visual Effects. A wide breadth of films was recognized through these awards, which is more than most award shows can say for themselves. Plus, Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody didn’t win, the big ones, so even better.

Check out the full list of film and television nominations below, with the winners highlighted in bold.
