Denis Villeneuve's Dune starts filming, Hans Zimmer set to score

Bring on the Night

According to a report from Collider, Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of Dune has entered full production. Filming is taking place in Budapest, Hungary, and Jordan and everything seems to be set for release next year. The screenplay for Dune was written by Villeneuve alongside Eric Roth (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Jon Spaihts (Passengers).

An official synopsis was provided by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment and reads as follows:

A mythic and emotionally charged hero's journey, "Dune" tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet's exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity's greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

In addition to beginning filming, it looks like acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer will be providing a score for the film. This will be his second time working with Villeneuve as he co-composed the score for Blade Runner 2049 alongside Benjamin Wallfisch. The trio made an incredible impression with that film, so I don't doubt Dune will have a fantastic soundtrack.

The only thing that has me worried about Dune is the amount of star power in the cast. Films with tremendous gatherings of talent tend to underutilize certain stars, which leads to disappointment with the film. I felt some of that with Blade Runner 2049, despite it being quite the accomplished film. Anything will be better than David Lynch's adaptation, but I'd love to see one solid Dune film in my lifetime.
