Disney is the big winner this weekend, and every weekend

Box office round up

If you had to take a wild guess at which company made the most money every weekend at the theaters it wouldn't make much sense to guess anyone but Disney. Even when they don't open number one, as they did this weekend with The Lion King netting $185 million, they still win by having so many movies and properties out at once its impossible to lose. Or by gaining the biggest box office in history.

The Lion King total was a new record for July, putting every critic who just shrugged their shoulders at the film to shame. The box office is the second largest for the year and the seventh largest ever. Also, if you count this as an animated film, then it's the top grossing animated film ever. If you don't, well, it's still a crap ton of money. It will be interesting to see if audiences respond the same way and the movie has a big drop off next week or if it's actually this popular with audiences.

By the way, Disney also owned second and third place with Spider-Man: Far From Home and Toy Story 4 respectively. It's not until Crawl, in fourth place with $6 million, that you get a film from a different studio.

1. The Lion King - $185,000,000
2. Spider-Man: Far From Home - $21,000,000
3. Toy Story 4 - $14,600,000
4. Crawl - $6,000,000
5. Yesterday - $5,100,000
6. Stuber - $4,000,000
7. Aladdin - $3,800,000
8. Annabelle Comes Home - $2,660,000
9. Midsommar - $1,599,155
9. The Secret Life of Pets 2 - $1,530,000
