Disney rebooting Mary Poppins, going to need lots of sugar

Have you been clamoring for a Mary Poppins sequel? No? Well, too bad.

Disney is rebooting Mary Poppins with Into the Woods director Rob Marshall at the helm, The film will take place 20 years after the original movie, and will likely draw from P. L. Travers' later Mary Poppins novels for story ideas. As of this writing, there is no indication of the film's tone, if Mary Poppins will be approached to join The Avengers.

As a kid, Mary Poppins was one of my favorite movies, with its charming songs and nice mix of live-action and animation. (The film is also the first time I heard the word "suffragette.") The worst case scenario for this reboot/sequel would be catching up again with the Banks family 20 years after the fact. Well, okay, a dour love story about Mary Poppins and Bert would also be pretty bad.

This move to revisit an old Disney IP isn't unprecedented. In 1997, there was a made-for-TV sequel to the Love Bug series that starred Bruce Campbell. There was also a 2005 Love Bug movie, Herbie: Fully Loaded, that starred Lindsay Lohan. The original Love Bug was another fav as a kid--it features a car getting drunk on Irish coffee and a man saving the sentient Volkswagon Beetle from committing suicide. Fun.
