Dumbo flies in with a winning box office

Box office round up

We're not going to be calling Dumbo a hit any time soon unless something magical happens. The film, which would be the first real flop in Disney's sturdy line of animated remakes, pulled in only $45 million. While Pete's Dragon definitely made less with $21.5 million, that film didn't have the budget or the historical weight that Dumbo carried and Disney has to be smarting coming in so far behind for the expected $60 million predicted box office. The relentlessly harsh review won't help its legs either. Dumbo's international haul was OK, but considering that it premiered everywhere day-and-date the $71 million it pulled in is going to make turning a $170 million film profitable difficult.

Never fear for Disney, however, as Captain Marvel is pretty much guaranteed to hit a billion dollars sometime this week. I think the corporation that controls nearly all popular media that isn't owned by Netflix will be just fine and dandy.

As will Jordan Peele, whose Us crushed another box office weekend pulling in $33.6 million. A decent drop from last weekend but a fantastic box office for an R-rated, genre film's second weekend no matter what. The movie is going to see some stiff competition, however, once Pet Semetary lands next week. That movie got great buzz out of SXSW and with Stephen King being so hot right now its fair to say that Us could take a major blow.
