Edgar Wright spends his Last Night in Soho when the film releases next year

Shifting gears after his last film

Though it's without any fanciful trailer or more details, fans now have a better idea just when they'll be able to see genre-aficionado Edgar Wright's latest film, the psychological horror Last Night in Soho, set for a September 25, 2020 release.

Set in London, the cast is fairly stacked, with Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Thomasin McKenzie (Leave No Trace), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), and Michael Ajao (Attack the Block) all geared for whatever mayhem Wright has in store. Synnøve Karlsen, Diana Rigg, and Rita Tushingham, as well as personal favorite of mine, the great Terence Stamp are also set to feature. Wright co-wrote the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who wrote on Penny Dreadful's final season, and co-wrote the screenplay with director Sam Mendes for the upcoming 1917. Wright also serves as producer on the film along with Nira Park, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Focus Features will distribute in the US, with Universal Pictures International handling overseas screenings.

Details on Last Night in Soho are few and far between, though Wright has mentioned it to be a film "about the London I’ve existed in,” rather than the worlds of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead were said to be "places [he's] lived in." Rough neighborhoods, they must have been. Citing Polanski's Repulsion and Roeg's Don't Look Now as inspiration, it would sound as if we can expect something a little more grim than usual from the oddball auteur.

With Soho ironing out its post-production, it sounds as if Wright is already planning his next move, with a sequel to his 2017 crime film Baby Driver apparently already written and being shown to actors. This is of course to be taken with a grain of salt; Hollywood has a way of sidetracking you!

So, until (next) September then for Last Night in Soho.
