Enough Detective Pikachu outtakes exist to create an R-rated cut

Pika-fuck you!

For a little while, a rumor was going around that Detective Pikachu might be R-rated. While that was obviously fake, apparently there is some credence to the belief. In a recent interview with Kotaku, star Ryan Reynolds revealed that enough outtakes exist from the Detective Pikachu recordings to create an R-rated cut of the film. Pikachu's say the darnedest things, I guess.

"Motion capture is a unique experience in which you are alone and you throw a billion things up against the wall," Reynolds said to Kotaku. "It's up to somebody else to sift through it and figure out what they think is going to be applicable and what they feel they want to use." He clarified that he came up with about 85 different options for any one joke, a bunch of them being more adult oriented. "Everything ran the gamut from Rated R to PG," as he said.

This doesn't confirm that an R-rated cut of the film exists or ever will exist, though. "You could probably squeeze together a Rated-R cut if someone went looking for it in the edit, I'm sure," Reynolds added. "God forbid they would." I don't think Nintendo wants to shatter the minds of children that are expecting the cuddly rodent to be cute instead of mature. Then again, the movie does feature the puffball saying "hell," so maybe I'm being too sheltered.
