First trailer for Black Widow takes the super spy back home

A wholesome family reunion

Following Avengers: Endgame (and its fun-loving epilogue, Spider-Man: Far From Home) the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have been a source of head-scratching for rabid fans looking for their next super heroic fix. Where will things go now..? As if there were any real doubt, Disney's got a roadmap. And Black Widow is our first stop.

The long in-demand solo film for one of the MCU's earliest Avengers, Black Widow follows Natasha Romanoff (Scarlet Johansson) on some personal business. Seemingly returning to the organization that made her the ass-kicking living weapon she is today, Romanoff reconnects with her "sister" (Florence Pugh) and other Soviet comrades like Red Guardian (David Harbour). Think: "Captain Russia."

Allegedly set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, the new film would land smack-dab in the middle of Marvel events that have seemingly come to fruition already... Or have they? How Black Widow ultimately fits into the bigger picture the writers and creators at Marvel Entertainment are painting will no doubt bring some retroactive "ah-ha!" satisfaction down the road.

With Robert Downey Jr rumored to make an appearance as the singular Tony Stark, the smaller-scale action in Black Widow doesn't look to scale down the entertainment factor a single notch.

Directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland, Black Widow releases May 1, 2020.
