First trailer for The Lighthouse wants you to spill your beans

Solitude and paranoia

A24 has just dropped the first trailer for the latest effort from Robert Eggers of The Witch. This sees Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson alone working a lighthouse with increasing paranoia and hostility. Dafoe ramps up some turbulent menace that I'm interested to see unleashed.

This has the beautifully evocative look of silent Gothics of the 20's with its constrained aspect ratio and plays of light and dark reminiscent of something like Sunrise. Our first peek naturally plays close to the vest, but there's already a lot to like here.

Already this looks to play off hallmarks Eggers established with The Witch with gorgeous shots of a desolate and ominous wilderness, feelings of isolation, and the deterioration of fraught relationships.

The Lighthouse will shore up to theaters on October 18, 2019.
