Hayley Atwell on board for The Return Of Captain Nemo

Captain America co-star Hayley Atwell has stepped aboard the S.S. Potential Disaster, aka The Return of Captain Nemo. The film is a $10 million 3D sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. (No word on how it ties into Mysterious Island.) Atwell plays the heroine Sara, the niece of a presidential adviser played by David Morrissey. Morrissey’s character frees Captain Nemo to help investigate sea monsters sinking ships off the Atlantic Coast. Hugh Bonneville will star as Nemo.

At the helm is Captain Pearry Teo. Judging from his filmography, he might not have the sea legs for the journey. Production will likely begin in Romania in January 2012, with the entire film shot in front of green screen and using CGI backgrounds. Kind of like Sky Captain, but with one-fourth the budget. Man the lifeboats.

When I first saw news of this project, I noticed the names Morrissey and Captain Nemo and got excited. I assumed they meant singer and former Smiths frontman Steven Patrick Morrissey — the Morrissey — and thought that the Moz would be playing Nemo. Sadly this is not the case. And besides, giant squid squeals could be human squeals, closer comes the screaming harpoon. This beautiful creature must die, this beautiful creature must die. A death for nautical reasons is murder. Electric calamari is murder.
