He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will get a Netflix animated series from Kevin Smith

Dropping the details Sunday at the 2019 Power-Con, Kevin Smith has announced that he’ll be bringing his brand of comic-book and general-pop culture guru-ism to Castle Grayskull, with Masters of the Universe: Revelation coming exclusively to Netflix.

Acting as showrunner on the animation, Smith had the following to say:

“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe. In ‘Revelation,’ we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”

Sounds pretty metal. Powerhouse Animation is the studio responsible for Netflix’s Castlevania series, so we can move forward with Masters with that much confidence, at least. The series will be written by Eric Carrasco (“Supergirl”), Tim Sheridan (“Reign of the Supermen”), Diya Mishra (“Magic the Gathering”) and Marc Bernardin (“Alphas”).

With She-Ra and the Princesses of Power calling Netflix home (She-Ra and He-Man are kin; the hyphen is a common middle name in Eternia) it makes perfect sense for the streaming titan to dip their toe further into the realm of… ’80s action figures. Masters of the Universe: Revelation is currently without a release window, but a 2020 date with the Masters seems a safe bet.
