Here’s your first look at Idris Elba in Ghost Rider 2

After breaking out in The Wire, English actor Idris Elba looks to be on his way to megastardom. His BBC series Luther has been well-praised and his movie roles are getting bigger: he was a controversial, but successful, choice for Heimdall in Thor and has roles in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim coming up. Before then, however, his career is going to have to survive Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, a sequel to the profoundly tiresome Nicolas Cage movie of 2007. Scans from Empire Magazine have offered the first glimpse of Mr. Elba in action as Moreau, a disciple of a warrior angel cult, plus a shot of the Ghost Rider’s new look and Nicolas Cage with a better haircut than first time around.

Reactions to the movie’s appearance at Comic-Con have been broadly positive and the recruitment of Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor is a good omen that the decidedly bonkers material will be handled with appropriately madcap energy. (It’s already known that the Ghost Rider now pisses fire, so that’s a thing which happens). The movie is technically a sequel, but will retcon several aspects of its predecessor, including a new origin story. It’s always encouraging to hear about a sequel potentially improving on a lamented first outing, but Cage has let me down too many times – Drive Angry was passable where it should have been a slam-dunk, Season Of The Witch just diabolical – for me to get excited. I’ve never read the comic though, so perhaps dedicated fans will find more to encourage them. Full scans after the jump.
