Hobbs & Shaw opening is not as big as The Rock's biceps

Box office round up

It wasn't a bad opening at all for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw as the movie pulled in $60.8 million domestically and $180 million globally. That puts the box office squarely in expectations for the domestic and highly successful for the global. America might be tired of spin-offs and sequels this summer but the rest of the world isn't.

The Hobbs & Shaw domestic box office is a $40 million drop from the box of The Fate of the Furious but that doesn't mean its a letdown. Spin-offs usually see lower box offices and the F&F franchise is one of the top box office money-makers that doesn't involve Disney. This is a strong win for Universal whose success each year is often driven by the massive returns of this series.

Nothing else really opened this weekend, but everything saw strong holdovers, including The Lion King and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The former film broke $1 billion dollars globally during the week and now stands at $1.195 billion. Meanwhile, the latter only dipped 51 percent week-to-week and pulled in another $20 million. Lot's of big movies making big money this week.

Next week, however, should be more interesting with a plethora of wide releases landing in a wide variety of genres. Keep an eye out for how the box office splits up after a summer of blockbuster films opening mostly on their own.
