If Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek happens, you bet your butt it'll be R-rated

Although the iconic filmmaker was still working the final edit on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood following a strong Cannes premiere, it's apparently not too early for Quentin Tarantino to start plotting his follow up film. And if persistent rumors and talks are indication, QT could be spacebound.

Tarantino's Star Trek film has been long in discussion, its persistence lending it more credence than most of the filmmakers numerous "what-if" projects that never/have yet to materialize. The man's got visions, and lots of 'em. The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood cover story of Empire features a probing interview with Tarantino, in which Star Trek rears its mug once again.

“It’s an R-rated movie. If I do it, it’ll be R-rated," Tarantino was adamant in responding to questions on the potential film's content. “There’s a script that exists for it now. I need to weigh in on it, but I haven’t been able to do that yet.” It comes as little surprise that someone as established and unique as Tarantino would be so in control of a major franchise film; after all, you can't imagine him giving up artistic freedom this late into a successful career.

As is the case with so many of the deals and plans in Hollywood, Tarantino's Star Trek could go belly-up overnight, so I'm hesitant to be too excited. Still, the course we're on we could be set to go where no man has gone before under a wild, F-bomb-dropping Captain Tarantino.

With the Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 canceled and Star Trek: Picard moving along on CBS All Access, the franchise remains active but without a major, bombastic film to throw up the summer tentpoles. A shot of QT might be the juice that the Enterprise needs.
