J.J. Abrams teases the reveal of Rey's parents in The Rise of Skywalker

'There's more to the story'

In a recent interview with ABC News, J.J. Abrams got up to his old schtick again and starting teasing bits of information about the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In a question addressing the lineage of main character Rey, Abrams stated, "I don't want to say that what happens in Episode 8 [didn't happen]. We have honored that. But I will say that there's more to the story than you've seen."

"I will say that we knew, going into this, that this movie, it had to be a satisfying conclusion. And we were well aware that that's one of the things that's been out there." This could mean a number of things, but the most likely is that the revelation of Rey's parents being nobodies in The Last Jedi was a fake-out. Considering the title of Episode IX, I'm now convinced it has nothing to do with Kylo Ren and everything to do with Rey.

Certain "fans" online gave The Last Jedi a bad rap because it wasn't their ideal Star Wars movie. While I wouldn't call it an all-time classic, I wrote a lengthy piece about the possibilities the film opened up for the Star Wars universe. I liked most of the changes not because they spit on the legacy of the series, but honored the past and pushed things forward to a new future. Having the same story eternally retold is not only boring but does little to expand the rich tapestry that Star Wars has.

From the title to even this small tidbit from Abrams, I'm starting to believe that The Rise of Skywalker is going to be a fan service laden adventure with a dreadful conclusion. Whatever happened to creating a trilogy focused on new heroes instead of bringing back old favorites?
