Matrix 4 finds its lead in Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Neo is not the only One

The Matrix 4 has found its leading man in Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. According to sources close to Variety, director Lana Wachowski met with various actors over the last week and determined that Abdul-Mateen II was the best fit for the leading role. He'll star alongside returning actors Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss for this series' long-awaited return.

As for what role Abdul-Mateen II will be playing, sources couldn't clarify. In the previous trilogy, Laurence Fishburne portrayed Morpheus. Morpheus was the leader of the resistance against the machines and helped propel Reeves' character to prominence. Rumors from The Matrix 4's announcement say that Morpheus will be cast as a younger actor, though it's unclear if Abdul-Mateen II will play him.

Considering two past actors are coming back, I find it unlikely that Morpheus will be recast for The Matrix 4. We'll likely get some trippy storyline where the past and present are fusing together in some ungodly way. I know that Morpheus perished in The Matrix Revolutions, but Neo and Trinity did as well. Since Reeves and Moss are back, it only stands to reason that Fishburne will be too.
