Neill Blomkamp will ignore Alien 3 and Resurrection

When it was announced that Neill Blomkamp is set to direct a new movie in the Alien franchise, a few people in the Flixist staff lost their minds (me included). I even posted a feature called “6 things we want from Neill Blomkamp’s Alien project” last night, and as if on cue, Sigourney Weaver and Blomkamp takes one of my wishes, and crushes it.

In an interview with Sky Movies, Blomkamp basically disowned Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection from the franchise, stating: “I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens. So it’s Alien, Aliens, this movie“. Thanks, Neill!

I understand many people will applaud this news, as people love to hate the last two movies, but I still think it’s sad to see them disregarded completely. While the story lost itself at the end there, they still had an impact on the franchise as a whole, and formed it to become one of the most influential science-fiction franchises around. But, I guess it’s easier and more sustainable to go back to Aliens. On the bright side, Hicks and Newt should still be alive, so Michael Biehn and Yolandi Visser (see the feature mentioned above), get ready!
