Netflix makes first purchase at SXSW

As Netflix has made production/distribution deals with names like Adam Sandler, the Duplass Brothers and, just two weeks ago, Cary Fukunaga, it comes as no surprise to see them toss their wallet around at SXSW. As they’ve acquired the worldwide distribution rights for Hannah Fidell’s, 6 Years, they’re kickstarting their deal with the Duplass Brothers, who are producers on Fidell’s latest movie.

6 Years stars Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story, The Bling Ring) and Ben Rosenfield (Boardwalk Empire) as a picturesque young couple, who has their relationship tested when unexpected opportunities pull them in equally unpredictable directions. Fidell’s last movie, A Teacher, is a strange curiosity for myself, as she presents a movie with a distinct and memorable voice, but ultimately, struggles to hold my attention.

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos had this to say about the acqusition, “We are thrilled to bring this terrific film 6 Years to audiences at SXSW and Netflix, and to extend our deal with the Duplass Brothers in the process.”. We all love the Duplass Brothers – they have yet to do a major wrong in my eyes – so I’m excited to see why they decided to produce this movie. It will be available on Netflix, globally, later this year.
