New Ghostbusters announced in original timeline

The film is returning to its 80s roots, but maybe we should leave it alone

Some film franchises should just be left alone, and Ghostbusters is one of them. Entertainment Weekly just announced that Jason Reitman will be bringing the series back in a whole new way. No, we aren't getting a sequel to the all-female Ghostbusters (thankfully).

What we do know is that it will take place in the same universe as the beloved original, but decades later after the events of the original two films. Jason seems to be following in the footsteps of his dad who directed the original 1984 film. Can he live up to what his father Ian Reitman did? That remains to be seen. What's interesting to note is that when he spoke to Entertainment Weekly about taking on this project he claims to be first true "Ghostbusters Fan"

The film is slated for a Summer 2020 release date, according to Sony Pictures with shooting to begin in the next few months. An animated Ghostbusters film is also in the works at Sony but will be released following this new live-action project. No one from this project will be involved in the animated movie. Reitman right now doesn't plan to reveal too much about the film's plot or who will be making cameo appearances. He claims he wants the details to unravel slowly.

"This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet."

Is this truly something hardcore Ghostbusters fans want? I really don't think so. If it was going to be done it should have been done much much sooner. I get it though. It's a franchise that can bring in lots of money. So far all the remake did was bring lots of bad memories. Let's be honest, even the Ghostbusters video game was better.

The good news is that Jason's dad will be producing the movie. Perhaps there is a glimmer of hope the film won't be steered in the completely wrong direction. One can't really judge until we see stills and of course a trailer of some sort. I will reserve judgment until then and continue to enjoy the original films. Now if only we can just forget that what we saw in 2016 ever happened.
