New Happy Death Day 2U looks to miss all the same opportunities

Still missing the repeated point

Happy Death Day was one missed opportunity after another... literally. The film was basically a horror version of Groundhog Day and yet its kills weren't creative and its execution was middling. That's thanks in large part to a PG-13 rating. Despite the flaws, it made a killing at the box office so it's now getting a sequel, Happy Death Day 2U. Judging from the new trailer it's going to make the same mistakes as last time.

There are a few spoilers (though not as spoilery as the original trailer) in the above trailer so if you haven't seen the first yet then don't tune in but if you have then you'll note that the movie is once again hitting PG-13 and once again seems to be ignoring the perfect set up for increasingly elaborate kills. Instead, the movie is simply banking on the draw of Jessica Rothe in a bikini to make you think it will be worthwhile. It isn't like the first film was terrible, it just wasn't what it could have been and with the same director returning to film and using the same damn day in it, I just don't have high hopes for this one.

Happy Death Day 2U lands on February 14, 2019.
