New Releases, week of 2/2/13: Creepy Jet Lag Pillow Ed.

It seems my idiocy abroad and last night’s cross-country red-eye have started to catch up with me because I am jet lagged something fierce. At this point, time has no meaning, space is a misinterpretation of proximity, matter is energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively — there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves… Time for new releases! (We miss you, Bill Hicks.)

This week’s big new things include Genndy Tartakovsky’s Hotel Transylvania, the eccentric ensemble piece Seven Psychopaths, and the cheap-o-quickie Paranormal Activity 4. Also out are the apparently disappointing Citadel, All Superheroes Must Die, and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2. I’m interested in checking out The Dark Knight Returns in its entirety to see how it stacks up against the source material. (By the way, the less said about The Dark Knight Strikes Again, the better.)

On the re-release side, the big one is a 25th anniversary Die Hard collection on Blu-ray, featuring all the films in the series so far and a bonus “Decoding Die Hard” disc. On that disc are seven all-new documentary featurettes on the franchise, and possibly a crummy commercial about drinking Ovaltine. Also notable are a remastered edition of White Zombie with Bela Lugosi, Luis Buñuel’s That Obscure Object of Desire on Blu-ray (non-Criterion, which makes me wonder about the film rights), and some kooky-looking trashy-movie two-packs. Gorgan vs. The Flying Spider looks promising if you’re into Japanese kauiju and fantasy movies, though may want to do some research about different editions of the film (it’s also known as The Magic Serpent).

After the cut are the new things on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as a few treats for fellow exhausted travelers.
