New Releases, week of 2/9/13: My Bloody Valentine Edition

[UPDATE: Just received notice of a new addition to today’s new releases. The horror anthology V/H/S is available today on VHS.]

All of your dorky music nerd friends probably wet themselves last weekend over the new My Bloody Valentine album, m b v, their first new album in 22 years. In related news, I need a new desk chair and futon. While it’s not as good as Loveless, it’s pretty good, and I’d like to see My Bloody Valentine live again. Last time they were so loud that they made heads blow up like in Scanners.

On the DVD/Blu-ray new release front, it’s a bit of a calm before next week. There’s Robert Zemeckis’s Flight starring Denzel Washington, Celeste and Jesse Forever starring Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg, and Alex Cross starring Tyler Perry as a young Morgan Freeman. (They really should have made it a Medea movie somehow.) Also of note for fans of the Brothers Quay and Jan Švankmajer is the DVD/Blu-ray release of Toys in the Attic by Czech animator Jirí Barta. That said, it looks like it may be the English dub only (featuring the voices of Forest Whitaker, Cary Elwes, Vivian Schilling, and John Cusack) without the original Czech-language track.

On the re-release side, there’s Disney’s good ol’ Peter Pan and the Criterion Collection’s release for the gorgeous Shohei Imamura film The Ballad of Narayama. Also, some Blu-rays for Cabaret, Otto Preminger’s classic noir movie Laura, and A Star is Born.

After the cut are this weeks’s DVD and Blu-rays and a little My Blood Valentine.

in another way - m b v - my bloody valentine
