By Back from warm and awful nice Austin to the cold, jerk-filled New York and what do I see? Lots of major releases out this week on DVD and Blu-ray. (Worst thing about Austin by the way: limited free wifi at the airport. Damn you, Boingo.)
Some of the high-profile new releases this week include The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Les Misérables, Zero Dark Thirty, This is 40, and Bachelorette. Also worth noting, the Marion Cotillard film Rust and Bone and the Tony Leung film The Great Magician — one involves a magician and the other involves a tragic killer whale accident, and I’ll let you guess which is which. (Somehow I did not make the latter up.)
On the re-release front, two bona fide classics from Criterion: Terrence Malick’s Badlands and Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger’s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. The UK monster movie Gorgo (basically a British Godzilla riff) is also getting a special reissue this week, and the same goes for Porky’s, the quintessential teen sex comedy of the 80s. The thing I’m most interested in on the re-release side is actually Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann. I know I’ve seen that box art before in video stores, now I finally get the see the movie.
