By The big new release this week is Star Trek Into Darkness, though you may feel a little ripped off if you buy it. And no, I’m not referring to the derivative storytelling or the fan-fiction vibe of the script. You see, the bonus features for Star Trek Into Darkness have been split up between various retailers. That means the audio commentary track is only on iTunes rather than the Blu-ray, so you have to download the audio commentary from iTunes if you want that. Also, not all of the making-of featurettes are available in one package or on a single release of the film. This is highly f**king illogical.
You may now scream “Khan” in unison.
Other new releases this week include the found-footage horror film Frankenstein’s Army, the charming geriatric table tennis doc Ping Pong, the DTV DC Comics animated film Justice League – Flashpoint Paradox, and the compelling reminder that our planet is royally f**ked Chasing Ice. On the re-release front, Criterion is putting out La Cage aux Folles as well as a new Blu-ray edition of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, there’s a 20th anniversary release of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, and there’s some Japanese pink movie-looking thing called Horny Diver: Tight Shellfish.
