Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve will write Captain Marvel

Guardians of the Galaxy, Inside Out writers will tackle Princess Sparklefists

It's offcial: Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve will write Marvel's upcoming Captain Marvel adaptation, the company confirmed today. The two women are certainly qualified – Perlman took the first pass at the Guardians of the Galaxy script and was a script doctor for Thor; LeFauve wrote Inside Out alongside Pete Docter.

This is a good move on Marvel's part. Captain Marvel will be the MCU's first female-led feature (coming a full decade into the project, unfortunately), and having a strong creative team is key to selling it. It's an unfortunate reality that female superhero properties have to be twice as good to be received half as well, so it's in Marvel's best interest to put a lot of weight behind this. It's extra nice to see that women are leading the project so far, especially after the recent news that Michelle MacLaren is leaving Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman solo film.

In the comics, Carol Danvers is only recently Captain Marvel, picking up the mantle a 2012 run by Kelly Sue DeConnick, after a long stint as a hero known as Ms. Marvel. Her promotion, so to speak, has been hugely popular, and her adventures as "Princess Sparklefists" have inspired an especially passionate fandom known as the Carol Corps that has become a powerful voice in the industry. DeConnick's success has arguably inspired a number of other female-led superhero titles, including a new, Pakistani-American Ms. Marvel and a new direction for Batgirl over at DC.

Captain Marvel hits theaters in 2018, which leaves plenty of time between now and release to speculate on casting, plot, director, and everything under the sun. If Marvel is smart, they'll keep the fun-but-undeniably-badass spirit of DeConnick's stellar (and ongoing) run with the character, but obviously that all remains to be seen.
