Orson Scott Card on sequel to Ender's Game

At the Los Angeles Festival of Books about a week back, there was a full interview with Orson Scott Card (thanks to EndersAnsible). What he said could be disappointing to avid fans of the Ender’s Game book series who may be expecting an incredibly faithful adaptation of the book. Here’s what he said:

It won’t be identical to the book. So if you go there expecting that please don’t be angry that it’s not just like the book. It can’t be. I don’t want it to be. You don’t want it to be, ok? You want it to be a good movie which the book would not have been. So we’ll all find out whether they’re successful or not, but I know everyone involved in this movie is doing their very best they can to do this.

Despite it not being an extremely close adaptation of the book, Card says that the film is “the best good people could do with a story they really cared about and believed in.”

With regards to an adaptation of the second book of the series, Speaker of the Dead, don’t hold your breath. Card says that the story is “unfilmable,” and if Ender’s Game movie is a success, a sequel would be another space adventure rather than a philosophical one.
