By Having seen his presentation to Universal Studios to helm an adaptation of the Hasbro board game ‘Ouija’ fail to spark interest, Taken director Pierre Morel has instead taken the director’s chair on Earth Defence Force, an alien invasion movie to be produced by Sam Raimi.
Although officially nothing to do with the identically named cult video game series by developer Sandlot, the film shares an almost identical premise. Where the game sees a frontline soldier battling a giant alien insect invasion on Earth, Raimi’s version sees the planet attacked by three alien warships and subsequently establishing, yes, a Defence Force as to combat an even larger approaching attack fleet. Although it’s hard to imagine a less original conceit, very much in the current trend for invasion movies à la Skyline and next year’s Battle: Los Angeles, if screenwriter Andrew Marlowe can tap the sense of humour that underpins the best of producer Raimi’s work, there’s plenty of potential for large scale B-movie fun.
