RoboCop being shot for a PG-13 rating

0

Dead or alive... actually just alive. Dead is too bloody.

Ever since the Robocop reboot script leaked things have been pretty dour for our half-human law enforcer. It's just hard to get people excited for sucking. However, word from SDCC was that it didn't look entirely terrible and Jose Padilha is directing and he is awesome. Well, he was, until he let this nugget drop:

“We were shooting the movie to be seen by the broadest possible audience, which means PG-13. This whole idea about ‘RoboCop’ has to be “R” because the first one was amazingly violent… I never really bought into that. You know, ‘The Dark Knight’ was PG-13, so you can get away with a lot.”

Now plenty of great stuff can be done with a PG-13 movie, and RoboCop could work as PG-13... maybe... not really. The point is that it sucks it has to be PG-13 because they need it to sell. They're so risk adverse that they're going to take away one of the aspects that made RoboCop stand out and, more importantly, heightened its social commentary. I'm still hopeful, but I fear the film is just not going to be as good as it could have been.
