Rogue One writer teases work on new The Last Starfighter

Gary Whitta, screenwriter for Rogue One, shared on Twitter that he and Jonathan Betuel have a project in the works.

Since Jonathan Betuel wrote the original The Last Starfighter, and the new concept art by Rogue One‘s Matt Allsopp is clearly of ships from that film, ehhhh wild guess says a reboot or sequel to 1984’s The Last Starfighter is in the works.

I’d almost rather see a sequel that deals with the fallout of the events of the first movie 30+ years later. I know it didn’t really work out for the Tron sequel, but I still like the idea.

Since Ernest Cline’s Armada is moving forward after the success of Ready Player One, hopefully it doesn’t eclipse this project, since they have essentially the same core plot (ie. teen gamer accidentally trains via a game to fly a real alien spaceship). We might have an Armageddon/Deep Impact situation on our hands if their production schedule lines up too closely.
