Ryan Reynolds teases a new direction for Deadpool 3

So PG-13

I've never been a huge fan of the Deadpool movies. I don't think that they're inherently bad, both of them are actually pretty okay, but I'm just sick and tired of Deadpool as a character. The snarky, fourth-wall breaking routine has run its course and the overexposure of Deadpool himself has me wishing we can go back to the days when Harley Quinn merch was overflowing out of Hot Topics across the world. Still, I can at least acknowledge that Deadpool filled a void that people didn't know they needed. He was the only R rated superhero in town, and I can respect that tenacity. Still can't stand the guy, but I understand why he's popular.

But it doesn't look like Deadpool is going away anytime soon, with Ryan Reynolds recently speaking out on a press tour during Deadpool 2's release in China about the future of the character. When asked about the inevitable Deadpool 3, he said that he and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were beginning to work on it and that they were "looking to go in a completely different direction" for the sequel. What that means is entirely up to debate, but I'm going to air on the side of cynicism and say that Reynolds is subtlely prepping us for a PG-13 Deadpool 3.

Fox was already experimenting with releasing a PG-13 Deadpool movie with December's Once Upon a Deadpool, which scored a neat $6 million over a 12 day period. Given that it was a rerelease that went up against some gargantuan holiday releases, that's not too shabby. I think that Disney will try and do whatever it takes to squeeze the most money out of Deadpool, and if that means toning him down to get a more marketable family movie, that would fall under the movie going in a completely different direction. But hey, maybe I'm just overthinking things, but until someone from the production comes out and confirms that Deadpool 3 will be rated R, I'll assume the worst.
